2022 so far – Getting to know us better
After what many people might have thought to be a rather unusual year, January saw the start of a fresh, new year.
We started as we meant to go on, jumping straight back into helping our clients find the protection they really need. Throughout the months of January and February we helped a number of people all in different situations.
These months were busy for many people, with them still being close to the start of the year. We ran a nice little competition, to win a box of lovely chocolates from our local chocolatiers here in Filey as well as a donation to a charity chosen by the winner. The winner was a local lady living in Filey, who kindly chose for the donation to go to Filey Sea Cadets. The Sea Cadets help children build their confidence and resilience, ready for the big world ahead of them, all whilst having fun.
Our donation of the month for February was also to a local cause, we supported a local man running 56 miles throughout February in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
With the team growing, February saw the appointment of a Head of Distribution, Austen. Austen is working closely with our advisers and is very fond of his whiteboard (he even made us take down a shelf with an award trophy on it so he could have it up!).
Meet The Team
After writing blogs for a good number of months now, I thought it might be nice for our readers, clients and anybody else who’s interested, to get to know the people behind all of the good work here at Cura. And to make it a little bit more interesting, I have asked staff to answer a few questions to get a little insight into who they are.
We are a team of 24 people and have grown over the past couple of years, but we certainly aren’t letting our growth distract us from what Alan and Kathryn Knowles set out to do. Our vision is to reach a stage where no-one is told that they are uninsurable, that they are always given options and signposted to specialists like us, that can help.
In no particular order, the first person I am going to introduce you to is Nick, who is one of the protection insurance advisers here at Cura.
Nick – Protection Insurance Adviser
I am a protection insurance adviser at Cura, and I’ve been with the company for nearly 6 years now. My favourite part of the job is being able to get cover for someone who really needs it, and when they are truly grateful that we’ve been able to help; this makes it worthwhile for me.
What’s your favourite memory?
I would say I have a handful of memories that probably define me as a person, but if you had to pin me down to one, if I close my eyes I can see the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Mexico. This wasn’t too long ago, so there’s probably some recency bias here.
What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?
A guitar, a football (Wilson?) and maybe a big tub of sun cream (assuming it’s going to be hot there).
If you had to listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is really tough… maybe Lean on Me or Careless Whisper, or something by the Backstreet Boys.
What is your favourite thing to do when you’re not working?
Just the simple things that we all should do in life – go out for dinner, watch a movie, football football football, and be with the people I care about (and my dog).
What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?
It’s going to sound cliche but do something that makes you happy, and work hard. But also try to have a good home life.
What’s your favourite dad joke?
I don’t know any jokes, so I Google searched and this was one of the first ones I came across: “Singing in the shower is fun until you get soap in your mouth. Then it’s a soap opera” – I thought this was pretty good.
Case study
A great way to show the things we help with is by showing a client case study. We had a client in their mid 30s needing life insurance to provide financial security to their family. They had been diagnosed with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis a number of years before coming to us. We did our research, found the best option, but after evidence had been assessed by the insurer the application had been declined.
We weren’t prepared to take no for an answer.
Doing right by our client, we challenged this decision with the insurance company which resulted in new terms. This client now has a life insurance policy for 20 years, covering them for £420,000 for just under £34 per month.
As the months go by, you will get to know more of the people here at Cura, and see the things that we get up to.
