Kidney Cancer & Life Insurance
We understand that hearing that you have cancer, can bring a whole range of emotions. There may be worry over what the future may hold and also a determination to put things in place, to make sure that your family will be ok, just in case.
We are here to help you to understand the life insurance options that will be available at different stages, following your diagnosis of kidney cancer.
Things we need to know:
- When were you diagnosed with kidney cancer?
- What was the staging and grading of the cancer?
- What treatments did you have?
- Are you still undergoing any treatments or follow-ups?
When you apply for life insurance, it will be really useful to know the TNM score that you were given for your kidney cancer. This will detail the size of the tumour (T), whether there was any lymph node involvement (N), and if metastasis has occurred (M).
Life insurance for people that have had kidney cancer, will need to be researched carefully.
Depending upon the time since your diagnosis and treatment, some insurance options can become quite pricey. The general rule is, the longer since your diagnosis and treatment, the more likely it is that you will be able to get life insurance.
Insurers will be particularly interested in knowing information about any lymph node involvement, or spread of the cancer to other organs. They will also want to confirm that your kidneys, or remaining kidney, is functioning well.
There is the potential that after a number of years since your last treatment, you may be able to get life insurance at standard terms. This will be highly dependent upon your kidney cancer having been of a low grading.
Even after a number of years, you could find that you need to apply to specialist insurers to access life insurance. This does not necessarily mean silly prices, but it is a good idea to have an adviser clearly explain what these policies offer.
It may be that you have tried to find life insurance and been declined, because you had or currently have kidney cancer. We have access to many different routes to life insurance and are happy to talk you through the options that we have.
Kidney Cancer & Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness cover pays out a cash lump sum of money, if you are diagnosed with a medical condition that is listed in the insurer’s claims set e.g. cancer, heart attack, stroke.
When you apply for critical illness cover after having cancer, options can feel quite limited. Cancer is one of the biggest claims for critical illness policies, and with you having had it in the past, it is something that they will want to have time to consider.
The functioning of your remaining kidney will be considered, during the application process.
It is quite likely that if critical illness cover is available, that there will be a cancer exclusion. This will not sound ideal I know, but you will still be covered for things like heart attack, strokes and many other conditions.
Sometimes, where the kidney cancer was low grading and it was quite a while ago, then critical illness cover might be available without a cancer exclusion.
Kidney Cancer & Income Protection
Income protection pays you a replacement of your monthly income, if you are unable to work due to ill health.
Income protection for people that have had kidney cancer, may be available at normal terms once you have fully recovered and there has been a number of years since your last treatment.
It is more likely that any offer for income protection will come with either an increase to the policy premium, or a cancer exclusion on the policy.
There are many factors that are considered when assessing an income protection application, so it is not possible to give specific indications of what might be available. It really comes down your own experience of having kidney cancer.
GET AN INCOME PROTECTION QUOTE
If you find that the terms you are given for income protection do not meet your expectations, it may be worthwhile considering Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover.
This type of policy provides a short-term monthly income replacement of 12-24 months if you are unable to work due to disability, long-term injury or redundancy. Accident, Sickness and Unemployment cover is not medically underwritten at the application stage which means that you will be accepted for the policy at standard terms.
Whilst this can be beneficial to people that have had cancer, you should be fully aware that the policy will exclude any claim that is related to an existing medical condition. It is essential to speak with an adviser, who can help you determine how your history of cancer, might affect the policy claims set.

Common Questions
Hi, this is a bit tough to answer without more information. I’m sorry that you have not had a more positive experience in looking for life insurance. The policies on offer will really depend upon the type of kidney cancer that you had, and how strong it was. It may be that some insurers will not offer the cover, some may be high prices, some may offer high prices that then reduce after a few years.
Have you checked if your employer offers life insurance to you as benefit of your work? This will probably be a good option as there is often very little medical underwriting. We can help you look into this and if you have your own business, it could be worth chatting about setting it up.
